What is malignant mesothelioma?

Malignant mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining around the lungs (pleural mesothelioma) or a cancer of the lining around the abdominal organs (peritoneal mesothelioma).

What should I do if I have been diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma?

The first step in any successful battle against malignant mesothelioma is to become informed. Please visit our mesothelioma treatment options page to assist you in finding mesothelioma specialists or simply call us and we will be glad to discuss a variety of treatment options with you.

What does service in the Navy have to do with malignant mesothelioma?

The only known cause of malignant mesothelioma in the US is the exposure to asbestos dust. Between World War II and the early 1970's, thousands of tons of asbestos insulation were used to insulate the boilers and steam piping systems inside of Navy ships. Tragically, the asbestos manufacturers that supplied the government with asbestos knew about the dangers as long as sixty years ago, but kept this knowledge secret.

Why is exposure to asbestos so dangerous while aboard ship?

Exposure to asbestos, for even a brief period, can be dangerous in any situation. However, the close quarters and poor ventilation in Navy ships often exposed crewmen to massive amounts of dangerous asbestos fibers. These exposures occurred during routine maintenance and during regularly scheduled shipyard overhauls. Even a brief exposure to asbestos while aboard ship can cause malignant mesothelioma.

Will I file suit against the Navy?

No, we do not take legal action against the United States Navy. Many companies manufactured asbestos products that were used on Navy ships and at Naval shipyards. We take legal action against the companies that manufactured these lethal products.
